Wills
Research shows that at any one time only about one
third of the adult population of England and Wales has
made a Will.
Many people leave making a Will to some indefinite
time in the future. Some never get round to it. Many
who do are relieved finally to have specified exactly
what they want to happen to their money and property
in the event of their death.
Although it is never pleasant to contemplate death,
once made a Will can give peace of mind. A Will can
always be changed if circumstances require it, but for
many people, a signed Will represents an unpleasant
task completed; something which no longer has to be
a cause of worry.
While a Will does not have to be prepared by a Solicitor,
it is often unwise to rely on a "home-made"
Will.
The use of unclear words or the failure to observe
the required formalities can lead to unintended results,
costly litigation and even additional Inheritance Tax
having to be paid.
If you do not make a Will, the State effectively writes
one for you, essentially assuming that you would want
your nearest relatives to inherit your estate. This
may not be what you would actually wish.
Making a Will is generally inexpensive and it can be
done quickly. It can certainly save a lot of expense
and disappointment for those left behind.
