Adoption
Within the firm we have a wealth of experience relating
to this difficult area. This is a very specialised area
in which we have a great deal of expertise built up over many years. Helen Broughton (President of Liverpool Law Society 2006)
is accredited by Resolution
as having a specialist expertise in adoption, and she
is one of very few in the Country to have that accreditation.
We have an established reputation for being at the
forefront of this complicated area of law and couples
seeking adoption are often recommended to use us as
specialists.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. "Do I have to be a certain age to adopt?"
A. Unless you are the birth parent of the child you must
be 21 or over in order to adopt. It is possible for
stepparent adoptions to adopt at a younger age.
Q. "Can single people adopt?"
A. Single people, married couples, single sex couples can
all adopt children. It all depends on your circumstances
and the particular child who is being placed for adoption.
It is a complicated area and we are happy to advise.
Q. "Which courts can deal with adoption proceedings?"
A. Magistrates Court, County Court or High Court. Again,
it depends on the circumstances and we are happy to
advise. Adoption law is evolving all the time. There
is likely to be new legislation within the next Parliament,
and we are still finding out the effect of the new Human
Rights legislation on adoption law generally.
